The Evolution of Gene Editing: WMD to En Vogue Science

It is almost mosquito season. The weather is getting warmer, the rains are making puddles for breeding grounds, Bill Gates is paying for GMO mosquitoes. All the normal things that make the summer great. I enjoy this topic immensely because it is such an old theory that sounds absolutely crazy, people are not completely inclined to accept it.

I wasn’t and maybe even I am still not. But when the evidence continues to make you itch (heh) then it is time to pay attention. So I want to take it back to the turn of the century and a new era of modern warfare.

The threat of biological weapons being used in war was prohibited after the signing of the 1925 Geneva Protocol, this expanded the Versailles Treaty to add bacteriological weapons and the continued prohibition on poisonous gas. But once World War II began, many norms were ignored and the Nazi scientist began secret programs to develop and create mosquitoes to spread disease to soldiers across enemy lines and borders.

From TheGuardian online, “In January 1942, the leader of the SS, Heinrich Himmler, ordered the creation of the Dachau entomological institute. Its official mission was to find new remedies against diseases transmitted by lice and other insects: German troops were often plagued by typhoid, and there were concerns about a developing typhoid epidemic at the Neuengamme concentration camp.”

Continued, “In 1944, scientists examined different types of mosquitoes for their life spans in order to establish whether they could be kept alive long enough to be transported from a breeding lab to a drop-off point. At the end of the trials, the director of the institute recommended a particular type of anopheles mosquito, a genus well-known for its capacity to transmit malaria to humans.”

What is interesting to consider, is that at the same time of the creation of biological labs in Germany, the United States was entering into their own biological warfare program, “The United States conducted a second review of the potential of biological warfare during 1941 and 1942 and implemented its program to develop biological weapons in 1943. The biological warfare program of the United States was conducted under military auspices and was characterized during its early years by a high degree of secrecy and controversial testing programs.” And the origin story was used as a similar cover as what was officially reported from Germany, “The purpose of the U.S. program in the early years was to deter the use of biological agents against the United States and its military forces, and to retaliate only if deterrence was unsuccessful. The program was characterized by an aggressive offensive and defensive research and development effort that would be modified to one based on maintaining a strong defense against biological agents.” Source The United States had a unique position though, biological weapons were to be only used as retaliation. Allegedly.

So now that we have some history, let’s get some more!

After WWII, the United States had a program called Project Overcast, Operation Paperclip or the Paperclip Project depending on the source. What this program did was bring the foreign (Nazi) scientists to the U.S. under the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency, to gather dossiers and from as far as I can tell, pick the brains of the scientists. What’s that saying? The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Time to travel to 2016!

In a report released by James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence at the time, there was a very interesting addition to what is a Weapon of Mass Destruction. It states, “Research in genome editing conducted by countries with different regulatory or ethical standards than those of Western countries probably increases the risk of the creation of potentially harmful biological agents or products. Given the broad distribution, low cost, and accelerated pace of development of this dual-use technology, its deliberate or unintentional misuse might lead to far-reaching economic and national security implications. Advances in genome editing in 2015 have compelled groups of high-profile US and European biologists to question unregulated editing of the human germline (cells that are relevant for reproduction), which might create inheritable genetic changes. Nevertheless, researchers will probably continue to encounter challenges to achieve the desired outcome of their genome modifications, in part because of the technical limitations that are inherent in available genome editing systems.” The wording is important here, he is specifically stating its only potential as a WMD is if it is coming from non-western countries or he is giving cover, you can decide. But damn, we sure are high and mighty about our ethical standards, considering the U.S. population has on MULTIPLE occasions been unknowingly the victims of government testing, but that’ll be another day.

MIT Technology Review published an article in 2016 with a somewhat sinister statement, “Clapper didn’t lay out any particular bioweapons scenarios, but scientists have previously speculated about whether CRISPR could be used to make “killer mosquitoes,” plagues that wipe out staple crops, or even a virus that snips at people’s DNA.”

Fast forward to 2018

Uh ok. Y’all. Welcome to the world of dual use. So we get comfortable with GMO mosquitoes. They are good right!!! Well, yeah but would we know when they aren’t? Anytime Bill Gates is involved, thats when. A Gates Foundation tech start up, Oxitec, has been doing to the good work.

But this year isn’t the first time we are seeing the mass releases of GMO mosquitoes. In 2020 a plan was approved to release 750 million mosquitoes in Florida in 2021 and again in 2022. Internationally, other countries such as Italy are doing the same. In 2019 they released their first batch. NPR Report

You can’t even buy GMO stuff at the grocery store in the EU but you can release mosquitoes on your population?

So, now is the fun stuff. I know what you’re saying. “What do you mean? It is all fun.” I know.

From PHYS.org, “But CRISPR-Cas9 could theoretically also be used for darker purposes, such as bioterrorism. It could alter pathogens to make them more transmissible or fatal. Alternatively, it could turn a non-pathogen, such as a harmless microbe, into an aggressive virus. The technique may even be able to alter a virus to make it dangerous for a larger range of species than it currently infects, or make it resistant to antibiotics or antivirals.

Whether CRISPR could be used to infect humans in a way to make them zombie-like remains a theoretical speculation.”

So we are putting out CRISPR mosquitoes, and how will that impact us humans? ZOMBIE LIKE?!?!

I wonder if there has ever been some theoretical never gonna happen scenario that was totally made up (see Event201 or Spars Pandemic or Food Chain Reaction Crisis).

MILITARY ZOMBIE SCENARIO

More, “If a zombie-like disease could be created, it clearly wouldn’t make deceased people reawaken as zombies. But an infection that passed through saliva with extremely high transmission and mortality rate, and which caused agitation, destructive behavior and death, wouldn’t be far off the horror that we see in zombie movies. Such a virus would spread rapidly from human to human in a similar manner to diseases such as Ebola and Marburg viruses. In the epic zombie film, 28 Days Later, the fictitious “rage virus” was, in fact, inspired by these two real-life viruses.”

So to tie this into a neat bow. Maybe Bill Gates had some fancy notions inspired by history. Maybe there are plenty of rogue scientists willing to do some gene editing for nefarious reasons. What are the odds that we are watching some bullshit classified program revealing itself. We have been seeing a lot of that lately. Telling you exactly what is going to happen before it does.

Phew good thing they haven’t been injecting everyone with experimental mRNA vaccines, and gene editing stuff left and right. And our government would never….

Oh wait.
